Over the last couple of weeks I’ve been enjoying the city. Strolling around in the sunshine, eating at some of my old favourite restaurants and discovering new places, and, enjoying all the gorgeous flowers in full bloom.
I’m enjoying spring more than usual this year, it could be because I’ve spent a particularly miserable winter stuck mostly inside recovering from knee surgery. But, to be honest, I’m not a winter person at the best of times and an excuse to stay indoors kind of suited me. I think it was because I’ve changed my attitude to my home city.
Recent years have seen huge changes in Amsterdam, some good, some not so great. There’s lots of people complaining about overcrowding, due mostly to over-tourism. I was/am one of them.
It was all getting too much and I felt I was fighting my way through hoards of disrespectful travellers who treated my town and me, like some sort of must see attraction. I’ve been hit on the head by Italian girls’ selfie sticks and spat on by French folk on bikes, and so many more things that just annoy me too much to mention.
Even so, I still love Amsterdam and wouldn’t swap my home for anything. Those idiots are still around, but I ignore them, and don’t rant to friends about them. I focus on the great things in my city and, as if by magic, I hardly notice the downsides any more.
