A Weekend At Home
I’d be home alone for most of the weekend and I had a list of chores. A list I’d been adding to for weeks, to be done on a weekend exactly like this, when I had an open diary. Thing is though, the sun is shining, for the first time it feels like, this year and do I really want to be stuck inside taking care of jobs around the house, boring jobs, jobs that could be put off to another time … no.
I tucked the list into the back of my diary and went into the kitchen, I knew exactly what I was going to do. First, make a ragu sauce, not my usual spaghetti sauce, not the quick one I call Bolognese, but isn’t really. It’s tasty, it’s good, but there’s a key ingredient missing, time. Normally when I make my sauce the priority is to get a delicious meal on the table. This time, I want a sauce I can eat over the weekend and the rest I’ll freeze. I get the ingredients together, get everything going and leave it to simmer … for hours. I already feel calm.
Next, I’m making muesli, I’ve been doing it for years. I was a confirmed cereal breakfast eater, until I started reading the packaging. All those hundreds, thousands of bowls I’d eaten, thinking I was giving myself a good start to the day, em, no. You think I’m going to go on about sugar, no, not that most of them aren’t packed with the stuff, it’s salt, they’re full of salt. Anyway, I decided to make my own breakfast cereal. I vary the recipe every time I make it with different nuts and seeds and dried fruit, but the base is the same.
So, sauce is blipping away, muesli is made, all I want to do now is read, in the sun, outside on my not so clean balcony with the not so clean windows – I’ll do that another day.
